What is Comp (Complimentary)?

A comp or complimentary is a service, room, meal, or amenity provided to a guest at no charge, typically as a goodwill gesture, loyalty reward, or service recovery.

Comps are common in hospitality. A room upgrade for a loyal guest, a complimentary breakfast after a service failure, a free drink at the bar for a VIP — these gestures build relationships and recover from mistakes. The key is tracking them. A comp should appear on the guest folio as a charge followed by an adjustment, not simply be omitted. This gives management visibility into how much is being comped and why.

Why Comp (Complimentary) matters

Comps are a powerful tool for guest satisfaction and loyalty, but untracked comps are a revenue leak. Every complimentary service should be recorded on the folio at its full value with a comp or adjustment entry so management can see the true cost of goodwill.
